Sanz Records

About these records

Nowy Sącz (in Yiddish: Sanz) was a town in Austrian Galicia. Under Austrian rule the town kept tax journals and other records in German, with names of the people who paid house tax, trade tax and other dues, often with their house number.

This index covers record books from the 1780s to 1880 (most of them the tax journals of 1825 to 1852; the town and property books reach earlier and later), held today by the Archiwum Narodowe w Krakowie, Oddział w Nowym Sączu. Every page was photographed in the archive's reading room, and the names on each page were read into a searchable list.

Searching. Spelling in the old books is not fixed: the same family can be written Kogel, Kogl, Kugel or Kögel, and i/y/j and w/v are swapped freely. The normal search finds the same spelling and names one letter different (i/y/j, w/v and ch/ck/k count as the same). Exact shows only your spelling. Wide also shows names that sound alike (Daitch-Mokotoff) - many more, and many unrelated.

What you see before you buy. The search and the family-name lists show the names only. When you buy a page you get the photo of the page and the record details: the archive signature, the year and where the name is in the book.

Archive signatures look like 31/15/0/1.6/129: the collection (fond) number first, then the series and the unit number. Use the signature when you write to the archive.

Prices. One record page costs $20. Buy 5 or more: $15 each. Buy 10 or more: $10 each. A page with a Halberstam record on it costs $40. Several names on the same page cost one page. The written data of a record without the picture ("Data only") costs $5 less. More about prices.

Questions or corrections are welcome: every record page has a form to send a comment or report a mistake, and if you cannot find your family, ask us.
